The socio-ecological transition

The problem

The Sustainable Development Organization Smoothop is not a company, it is a non-profit organization. The primary objective of its members is not to make a profit, but to accelerate the socio-ecological transition. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the socio-ecological transition brings enormous value to humanity. It therefore seems entirely justifiable to us that the individuals who invest in the transition and those who work to make it happen should be economically rewarded for their efforts. Moreover, the socio-ecological transition requires drastic and rapid changes, yet we are naturally reluctant to change. Therefore, the success of Smoothop's mission requires that the shift to sustainable development becomes economically preferable to maintaining the status quo. Only in this way will we be able to overcome our natural inertia and accelerate the socio-ecological transition.

The tôk system provides a solution to these economic problems. The tôk system provides Smoothop members with an accessible and practical way to fight against climate change and socio-economic inequalities.

Stage 0 : Tôk system initialization

Fossil fuel extraction is no longer economically viable and eventually ceases. 100% of the energy produced and consumed is from renewable sources. All humans can become members of Smoothop if they wish. Each Smoothop members receive 1 tôk per 15 days. The value of the tôk is tied to the demand for green energy. There is a de facto universal basic income and meeting the needs of the poorest then becomes a viable business model. When this stage is reached, the socio-ecological transition has been achieved.

Stage 8 : Mission accomplished

The ecological transition brings an imbalance between the local production and consumption of electricity due to the intermittency of renewable energies sources such as wind and solar. Smoothop's  Internet of Energy provides a solution to this issue by enabling the purchase and sale of electricity and green hydrogen (produced by electrolysis with renewable electricity) on an international market. The energy that circulates in Smoothop's supergrid is 100% renewable and exclusively bought and sold in tôks.

During this stage, renewable energy becomes abundant and its price falls despite growing demand, since production is no longer limited by the issue of intermittency. Green hydrogen and synthetic fuels produced from it become cheaper than fossil fuels.

Stage 7 : Launch of Smoothop’s green energy exchange

Once stage 5 is completed, Smoothop focuses its resources on the ecological transition. The carbon exchange then serves as an indicator of its progress.

During this stage, Smoothop benefits from its international presence to develop underground green energy transmission lines between different regional power grids. Smoothop aims to build a supergrid (a grid of grids) on a global scale. Like an Internet of Energy, this supergrid would make it possible to exchange electricity on an intercontinental scale, at the speed of light and without energy losses.

This Internet of Energy may seem futuristic or even magical (just like the Internet of Information that we use on a daily basis for that matter), but it must be understood that it is entirely based on mature and commercially available technologies (underground superconducting cables cooled with liquid hydrogen produced by electrolysis with renewable electricity).

Stage 6 : Building the Internet of Energy

Building on the experience gained during stage 4, Smoothop is ready to begin its international expansion, country by country, citizen by citizen. Smoothop recruits new members among people who share its goals and are interested in receiving the basic income of 1 tôk per 15 days. During this expansion, Smoothop adapts to the different realities of the new countries where it operates and collaborates with their local institutions.

In parallel, Smoothop is also collaborating with the academic community to plan the details of its ecological transition project and to perfect the technologies which are essential to it, in particular that of superconducting cables cooled with liquid hydrogen.

Stage 5 : Tôk system goes global

The contribution from worker members, investor members and responsible members has enabled Smoothop to strengthen its team and improve its computer platform supporting the tôk system. Moreover, by participating in the stôk-marquette, members have ascribed tangible value to the tôk, which paves the way for an expanded use of the tôk system. Smoothop continues its development by offering a simple and fast means of payment in tôks. The goal is to reduce friction in tôk transactions as much as possible so as to facilitate cooperation between Smoothop members. User members who choose to pay in tôks or accept tôks as payment for their day-to-day transactions help increase the value of the tôk. Thus, they support Smoothop in achieving its mission. During this stage, Smoothop collaborates actively with government authorities in order to harmonize the tôk system with the fiscal rules of the regions where it operates. In addition, Smoothop is improving its computer platform, its logistics for adding and welcoming new members, as well as its communication methods.

Stage 4 : Tôk system upgrade

The funds raised from its investor members have allowed Smoothop develop and now launch its carbon exchange. Responsible members can now offset their GHG emissions by buying carbon credits on Smoothop's carbon exchange and thus contribute to accelerating the socio-ecological transition. Indeed, since carbon credits can only be purchased in tôks, responsible members whose basic income is not sufficient to buy the carbon credits they need to offset their emissions must purchase additional tôks on the stôk-marquette. In this way, the responsible members increase the value of the tôk and thus help Smoothop to accelerate the transition.

Stage 3 : Launch of Smoothop’s carbon exchange

At this point, a prototype of the tôk system exists in the real world, but it is only usable in Canada, at least for the moment. The tôk system takes the form of a computer platform on which it is possible to carry out transactions in tôks with other users and to exchange tôks for CA$ on the stôk-marquette. The platform also allows members to vote on the tôk wealth tax rate. During this stage, Smoothop essentially operates like a typical start-up company. Smoothop gets funding from its investor members to accelerate its development. Investor members buy tôks (in CA$) on the stôk-marquette, because they believe in Smoothop's mission and because they believe that tôks will be worth more (in CA$) in the future. However, it should be noted that, unlike a company that sells shares to its investors, the tôks that Smoothop sells do not provide any equity in the organization. As a non-profit organization, Smoothop is not owned by anyone and each of its members has equal voting rights at general assemblies.

Stage 2 : Tôk system startup

At its core, the tôk system is an economic concept, an idea. To become usable, it must take shape in the real world. On the one hand, this implies the propagation of the idea of the tôk system and to ensure that it is understood, which requires a significant work of communication. On the other hand, the use of the tôk system requires a computer platform, which must be developed. Finally, since our world is a jungle of legal and fiscal rules, the existence of the tôk system in this world requires important administrative work.

The worker members who contribute to Smoothop’s development are, of course, the employees of the organization. Smoothop’s worker members receive a base salary in the conventional currency of their country, plus an additional compensation in tôks.

Stage 1 : Building the tôk system prototype

The Sustainable Development Organization Smoothop was founded in Montreal on October 15, 2021. At time t0, all the tôks in existence are contained in the Transition Fund. Founding members begin to receive their basic income of 1 tôk per 15 days. The founding members vote for the tôk wealth tax rate to be 1% per year. This immediately results in a flow of 70 billion tôk per year in the account of the executive board.
